Youth Career Day 2008 A Success

The intensely warm summer sun could not compete with the output of energy inside Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library on Saturday, August 23. The combined wattage of brainpower and experience of more than a dozen professionals illuminated the career and higher education paths for more than 70 high school and college students at the 2008 Youth Career Day. The event was a joint sponsorship of the Chinese American Citizens Alliance Youth Council (CACAYC), Bruggemeyer Library and the Next Generation Group (NGG). Proudly representing The NGG and the Eng Family Benevolent Association were Lance Eng, who moderated the professionals panel, and Elizabeth Wu, who co-led a resume writing workshop. The principal event was a 90-minute panel discussion with leading professionals representing the fields of law, engineering, medicine, business, real estate, entertainment and education. Students and their parents had the opportunity to pose questions and seek advice in both the general and one-on-one sessions. Attorney Judy Lam closed the afternoon program with an informative workshop on polishing interviewing and presentation skills for tomorrow's workforce. Although Youth Career Day offered an abundance of targeted information, embracing open-mindedness about career choices was echoed in chorus by the panelists and speakers. "Keep your options opened," stated panelist Dr. Kenneth Chan. "I started out as an engineer and then I decided to become a physician. It's perfectly okay to start a new career—even at age 55."

The success of the Youth Career Day has inspired plans for sponsorship future career-specific workshops, such as law enforcement and entrepreneurism.
