- The Chinese government estimated death toll rose last Thursday (May 15) to around 20,000 but could eventually top 50,000. The official death toll now stands at 22,000, with 14,000 still buried.
- Relief efforts continue to be hampered by a series of deadly aftershocks, which at times forced rescuers to evacuate fallen buildings, leaving crowds frustrated at knowing the fate of loved ones. The suffering of Sichuan's inhabitants has been prolonged by repeated aftershocks, some 4,400 since the quake hit.
- The devastating earthquake in southwest China destroyed and heavily damaged 436,000 properties leading to 4.8 million homeless, according to official figures.
