Review: Thanksgiving Luncheon, November 15, 2009

On Sunday, November 15, 2009, the Eng Family Benevolent Association's annual Thanksgiving Luncheon brought members and their familieis and friends together to celebrate fellowship with food and drink. The tradition of its luncheon also enveloped a newer presence: civic-minded individuals and community groups that have had direct and indirect impact on the Next Generation Group of the Eng Family Association. They were:
  • Paul Chang, inspector for the U.S. Department of Labor
  • Craig Ishii, director, Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), Pacific Southwest District
  • Daniel Kwan, president, 100 Homes.
  • Collin and Sue Lai, Chinese American Citizens Alliance (CACA) L.A. Lodge
  • Namoch Sokhom, director, business center, Pacific Asian Consortium for Employment (PACE)
  • Bill Watanabe, executive director, Little Tokyo Service Center

In addition to the honored guests and visitors, plaques of recognition were given to two outstanding individuals that command significant orbits around the Association community. The Eng Family Benevolent Association recognized the recently retired chief of police for Monterey Park Jones Moy. Chief Moy's retirement party was held the same night as the closing banquet of the National Eng Family Convention in late September. Many of the Association members wanted to attend Jones' retirement party, but could not due to the scheduling conflict. Therefore, the Thanksgiving Luncheon provided the opportunity to honor this special son and grandson of Engs (Jones' Mother Judy Moy is an Eng) for his more than 33 years of public service to community safety. culminating with his appointment as Monterey Park's chief of police on September 25, 2004, the first Asian Pacific Chief of Police in Southern California. Also present with Chief Moy were his wife Joyce and their three boys: John, Christopher and Thomas.

Tracy Quinto was honored as the force behind the drive to refresh the interiors of the Association headquarters. Tracy, who lives in Orange County, drove more than 55 miles in brutal traffic after a day's work at his regular job to finish the project in Chinatown weeks, hours and days before the eve of the Eng Family National Convention. Tracy was recognized for his leadership in this ongoing improvement of the headquarters.
