2009 Eng Family Student Scholarship AwardsRecipients Honored for Academic Performance and Creativity
The requirement changes of the 2009 scholarship program reflected the Association belief that good citizenship is demonstrated by more than academic performance. It is about taking action through demonstrations of interest in the community and in the principles that the family association was founded upon. The essays and drawings submitted by the applicants revealed their characters and aspirations--important perspectives on the journey to adulthood and citizenship. The other equally important source of inspiration for the new scholarship requirement was the establishment of the scholarship award honoring the late Frank H. Eng, father of Assemblyman Mike Eng. Mike had provided an endowment in the memory of his father to encourage more people to participate in community service. It was in this spirit the scholarship awards program introduced project requirement.
All applicants received scholarships for academic performance based on their cumulative total of "A" grades submitted from Fall 2008 to June 2009, and not exceeding $100. The recipient of the sole $500 scholarship was Jonathan Ma, currently a freshman at the University of California at Berkeley, who graduated from Mark Keppel High School, Alhambra, this past June. His parents are Man and Nora Ma. Also, Jonathan's younger sister, Emily, who attends the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, was a 2009 scholarship recipient.
The 2009 judges were Mike Eng, Janice Ng, Jolson Ng, Nancy Ng and Winston Wu. Special thanks to the Student Scholarship Committee, especially Ben Ng for his guidance. The Association provided the lunch and members of the Next Generation Group assisted in the setup and food service.
Many of the essays and drawings are posted on this website and they will be mounted on a display board for the attendees of the upcoming 15th Eng Family National Convention to show visitors the depth of the Eng Family Benevolent Association of Los Angeles' commitment to education.
