Frequently Asked Questions

Why is there a new requirement for the scholarship? We believe that awarding scholarships should not only be about academic performance; it also is about good citizenship, which is one of the principal foundations of the Eng Family Benevolent Association of Los Angeles. In the Association's Articles of Incorporation, the purpose of the Association is described as "...aiding in developing the fraternal spirit between members of the family and to assist the said members by educational and social means to be worthy citizens and residents of the United States." We believe this needs to be demonstrated not only by excellent grades but through community action or individual expression. In 2009, an essay requirement was introduced. The essay addressed aspects of Chinese heritage and cultural traditions and their significance to the scholarship applicants (younger applicants were able to submit an illustration expressing appreciation of their culture). In 2010, applicants will be required to visit one of two venerable local institutions: the Chinese American Museum (CAM) and the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (CHSSC). The aim is to introduce a new generation of our members to two prominent local purveyors and custodians of Chinese cultural and social history. Applicants are required to write a short essay (200-500 words) about their visit and/or about a particular exhibit or a significant event in the history of the Chinese immigrant experience in Los Angeles. What is the basis for the scholarship awards? Recipients are awarded $20.00 (U.S.) for each "A" grade received with a maximum cap at $100.00 (U.S.). Scholarship eligilibility requires that applicants complete the assignment along with report card submittal. Important: Scholarships will not be awarded to applicants who fail to meet the project requirement. Where can I get more information on the Chinese American Museum (CAM) and the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California (CHSSC)? Please see the projects section. How do I know I am qualified to be a candidate for the scholarship? Please see the eligibility section for qualification guidelines. When are the materials due? Qualified applicants must submit required materials no later than Friday, August 20, 2009. Where are the scholarship materials submitted? Please mail or drop of submission materials to the Eng Family Benevolent Association Headquarters at 418 Cottage Home, Los Angeles, CA 90012, Attn: Student Scholarship Awards. If you are planning on dropping off the submission materials, please call the Association for hours of operation: (323) 227-8265. When are the scholarships awarded? Presentation of scholarships will be held at a special luncheon on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at the Eng Family Benevolent Association Headquarters at 418 Cottage Home, Los Angeles, CA 90012. We would like recipients to be available not only to receiving their scholarship awards but also to present their projects to event guests. If you cannot make it to the award ceremony, the scholarship money in the form of a check will be mailed to you. How many scholarship awards were given in 2009? In 2009, 11 recipients received monies through the scholarship awards program. Click here to read more about the 2009 Scholarship recipients.
